A New Way of Thinking

To me, the Fork Principle represents the absolute highest level of jiu-jitsu on the mat. In life, the principle teaches us to pursue optimal outcomes for multiple stakeholders in a given situation. That way everyone involved benefits and can claim a victory, which in turn increases the likelihood of sustainable long-term success for any personal relationship or business initiative. It’s not only your classic win-win scenario; it also has the capability to stretch beyond that to a win-win-win or even further, depending on the number of stakeholders and prongs to the fork. Of course, growing up in the Gracie family, the very notion of a win-win situation was completely foreign to us.

During the early days of the Gracie challenge matches, we were solely focused on defeating other disciplines. Our philosophy was that somebody had to win and somebody had to lose, so make sure the loser is them. It was a necessary belief for that time period if Brazilian jiu-jitsu was ever going to rattle, disrupt, and gain the foothold it deserved in the martial arts world. That intense rivalry, though, created a very unique relationship for me with these other traditional martial arts. I basically came to dislike and distrust them, as if I were personally involved with karate, kickboxing, or kung fu in a never-ending grapple for superiority. But as I began to mature, develop opinions of my own, and move forward in my thinking, this false feud faded into my personal rearview mirror.

When Ryron and I took over Gracie University, we realized that the overwhelming number of martial arts schools taught traditional arts. And if the hunger for Brazilian jiu-jitsu, spurred on by the triumphs of Royce and our family at the Ultimate Fighting Championships, was ever going to be sated, we would need to somehow find a way to partner with these traditional schools. We couldn’t teach classes everywhere at once, so my brother and I decided to start an Instructor Certification Program (ICP) to train other martial artists on how to properly teach our proprietary programs.

We certainly needed to cross a bridge of trust on our part to make this a reality. After all, we had been schooled to believe that these other artists were our heated rivals. Could we really partner with them? Refer to them as our extended family? Ultimately, we set aside our past prejudices and fully embraced the thinking of a new era. The response was incredible and provided us with a deep pool of qualified martial artists with an interest in teaching our courses.

Now, martial arts schools of any discipline can supplement their offerings with Gracie Combatives, Gracie Bullyproof, Women Empowered, and other trademarked programs. Our message to them has always been simple and consistent: Your school is amazing. Just add jiu-jitsu to whatever it is you teach, and you’ll undoubtedly attract more students. Three decades ago, it would have been nearly impossible to fathom the idea that traditional martial arts schools would be our biggest allies in both spreading and cultivating the seeds of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
